TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL iBT)

The test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. Most people who take (TOEFL)  are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English.

 

In addition many government agencies, scholarship programmes and licensing/certification agencies use (TOEFL) scores to evaluate English proficiency. Currently more than 6,000, two and four year colleges and universities, professional schools and sponsoring institutions accept (TOEFL)  scores.

 

(TOEFL) IBT (Internet Based Test) test all four language skills that are important for efficient communication: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success. The internet based  (TOEFL)  test is offered at institutional  sites such as colleges and universities and in testing  centers offered by Prometric, a division of Thompson learning.

 

The (TOEFL) IBT emphasizes integrated skills and provides better information to institutions about students ability to communicate in an academic coursework with internet course setting, ETS can capture sppeech and score responses in a standardize manner.

GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST (GMAT)

The graduate management admission test (GMAT) is a standardize assessment- delivered in English that help  business schools assess the qualification for advanced study in business and management.

Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA or in other graduate management programme. The(GMAT) measures basic verbal, mathematic and analytic writing skills that you have developed over a long period of time in education and work.

FORMAT AND TIMING

The (GMAT) consist of three main parts, the analytic writing assessment, the quantitative verbal and verbal section.

ANALYTICAL WRITING ASSESSMENT

The AWA consist of two separate writing tasks – analyses of an issue and analyses of an argument. you are allowed 30 mins to complete one.

QUANTITATIVE SECTION

This section contains 37 multiple choices of two questions types – Data sufficiency and Problem solving. You will be allowed a a maximum of 75 mins to complete the entire section.

VERBAL SECTION

This section contains 41 multiple choice sections types – Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning and Sentences Corrections. You are allowed a maximum of 75 mins to complete the entire section.

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)

The general test is offerd as a computer based test in Kenya, U.S.A, Canada and many other countries. This test measures the skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not particularly related to any field of study. the tset is composed of analytic writing (AW), verbal (V) and quantitative(Q ) sections.

Typical testing time is listed below:

AW          – 75 mins section writing tasks;

– Present your perspective on an issue; 45 mins

– Analyze an argument – 30 mins

V              – 30 mins section – 30 questions

Q              – 24 mins section – 28 questions

In addition an unidentified V or Q question that does not count towards a score maybe included. Be sure to do both V and Q section since you will not know which one will be counted towards your score. An unidentified research question that is not scored may also be included in the computer – based general test.

When you register for the general test you will receive free prepartaion material that will describe the test in more deatail and provide information to help you understand the scores you earn.
